Grandmother and one-year-old on Christmas morning, the child reaching for the letter A on a personalised wooden name puzzle laid on the rug between them

Christmas Gifts for 1 Year Olds: What They'll Play With (Besides the Box)

The short answer: a 1-year-old doesn't know it's Christmas, so buy for the six months after Christmas. That means things for the hands (matching, stacking, posting), one thing to keep, and one thing for the car. Spend $25–40 on the main present, keep the rest small, and let the grandparents buy the keepsake. Everything below is under $40.

Yes, they'll play with the box. They'll also play with the matching eggs every day until Easter, which the box can't claim. The American Academy of Pediatrics' twelve-month milestones are, almost word for word, a shopping list: "puts objects into container, takes objects out of container" — so buy the containers.

The keepsake — for the grandparents to give

Personalised wooden name puzzle with lift-out letters, gears and a shape sorter

Personalised Name Puzzle

$39.99

Ages 1+

Their name in chunky lift-out wooden letters, with gears, a shape sorter and a slider around it, and a free message engraved on the back — a birth date and weight, or "first Christmas, from Nana". At one it's letters to pull out and post back. At four they read their own name off it.

Order early

It's cut to order, so it needs about a fortnight more than anything else on this page. Order by mid-November for Christmas. It's the present that's still on a shelf at eighteen, and the one we point grandparents to every December.

Three things for the hands

Wooden geometric matching eggs

Geometric Eggs

$24.99

Ages 1–4

Twelve wooden eggs that only close when the shape inside matches. Open, check, close, repeat — the loop a one-year-old wants — and they're still doing it, faster, at two. The main present if you're buying one.

Plush busy beehive hide-and-find set

Busy Beehive

$34.99

Ages 1–4

Plush bees that hide in a hive and come out again. Peekaboo they run themselves, and soft enough to be the thing they fall asleep holding.

And the Shape & Count Sorting Board ($24.99): chunky rings on graded pegs. On, off, tip it over. Counting comes later on the same board.

One for the car

Fabric soft play barn with animals

Soft Play Barn

$29.99

Ages 1–4

A fabric farm that folds flat, with animals to post through the doors. You name the animals; they point; by their second Christmas they're saying "moo". Goes to every relative's house over the holidays.

If they're still a baby

A one-year-old in December might be fourteen months and running, or ten months and sitting. For the sitting end: the Baby Soft Crinkle Book ($14.99) — a cloth jungle book with crinkle panels and ribbon tags. First book they handle themselves, and washable, which it will need to be.

If it's summer where you are

The Pop-Up Beach Tent with Pool ($35.99) — a UPF 50+ pop-up tent with a shallow paddling pool in the floor, from about six months. For Australian and New Zealand families this is the one-year-old Christmas present: our most-bought product, used every hot day from Boxing Day to February, mostly on the lawn.

Gifts by budget

What we'd skip

Anything with a screen, anything with small parts (it all goes in the mouth), and the twelve-button activity table that plays twelve tunes. A one-year-old wants one thing that does one clear thing when they act on it. Also skip "age 1+" sets with a hundred pieces — the plus is doing a lot of work in that label.

Questions parents ask

What do you get a 1-year-old for Christmas?

Something for the hands and something to keep. Matching eggs and a name puzzle cover both for under $65, and between them they'll last from this Christmas to the one after next. If you're only buying one, buy the eggs — they get used every day. If you're the grandparent, buy the puzzle and write the message on the back yourself; it's the part they'll read out loud at twenty. Skip anything you'd describe as "so many features".

How much should you spend on a 1-year-old for Christmas?

Less than you think. They don't know what day it is, and they can't tell a $25 toy from a $125 one — what they can tell is whether it does something when they touch it. One present around $25–40 and one keepsake is plenty; the rest of the budget is for the adults' benefit, not the child's. The exception is the pool tent in a southern-hemisphere summer, which at $35.99 replaces a whole afternoon's worth of entertainment every hot day.

What's a good Christmas gift for a 1-year-old from grandparents?

The name puzzle, with the message on the back written by them. It's the gift that says who gave it for the next twenty years, and it's the one that doesn't duplicate whatever the parents bought. Second choice is the Soft Play Barn, because it's the toy that travels to the grandparents' house and back, and it gives them the animals to name together.

Do 1-year-olds need Christmas presents at all?

No. But they need toys for the next six months, and Christmas is a fine excuse to buy good ones instead of whatever's nearest the checkout. The trick is to buy for the child they'll be in March — walking, posting things, saying a few words — rather than the one on the rug today.
