Why the hole in the roof matters

Posting is one of the first deliberate things a baby does with an object, and it's usually practised on things adults would rather they didn't post. Here the whole toy is the posting slot. Drop the chick in the top, open the door, get it out, do it again — that loop is cause and effect, object permanence and a pincer grip all at once, and toddlers will run it dozens of times.

It makes noise — on purpose

The animals crinkle, rattle and squeak when squeezed or shaken, and the door crinkles when it's opened. That's deliberate: sound is the reward that tells a baby their action worked. It's soft, close-range noise rather than electronic noise — no batteries, no speaker, and it stops the moment they stop.

Age guidance

1 to 4. One is posting, emptying and the mirror. Two and three bring naming the animals and the beginnings of pretend play. The barn is about 20 cm across and the animals about 9 cm — sized for small hands.
