What it's actually building

Posting and retrieving is how object permanence gets rehearsed: the bee is gone, then the bee is back, and the child controls both. Then comes hide and find. Once a toddler works out that a bee can be somewhere they can't see it, the game changes from filling a container to searching for something — and that shift usually happens right around the second birthday.

The mirror in the door is the quiet extra. Self-recognition is a real milestone somewhere between eighteen months and two years, and a mirror set at a baby's own height, on something they already want to hold, gets looked into far more often than one on a wall.
