Three toys in one barn

Most shape sorters are a plastic bucket with circles and squares. This one cuts the holes in the shape of the animals themselves — a sheep and a horse through the red front wall, a sheep and a cow through the shingled roof, a hen through the gable end. A two-year-old learns the animal by its silhouette before they can name it.

Then the same eight animals become a threading toy: each piece has a hole through it, and the set includes a soft rope with wooden needle ends, so they can be laced into a line. That is the same rope that arches over the roof and carries the whole barn.

Inside, the barn is a two-storey shell with a wooden ladder to the upper floor and a single blue door on the gable end that really opens. The cat goes upstairs. The farmer stands in the doorway. That is where sorting stops and stories start.

Age guidance

2 to 5. Two posts the animals through their matching holes — that is the whole game, and it is enough. Three starts threading and works the door and the ladder. Four and five build proper stories, and the farmer starts having opinions.

Materials

Solid wood with water-based, non-toxic paint. The animals are cut a chunky 1 cm thick, which is what makes them easy for a two-year-old to grip. The threading rope is a supervised-play item, as cords always are.
