A wooden world map with magnetic pieces, a stand so it sits upright on a desk, and a deck of flag cards for when the map itself is mastered. The board is 46 by 36 cm and printed with the oceans, the continents and the animals and landmarks that belong to them; the magnetic pieces are the countries and regions, each carrying its own picture so a child can find where it goes by matching the beaver or the Statue of Liberty before they can read the name.

Geography as a puzzle, then as a map

At four it is a puzzle with a lot of pieces and a very clear picture of where each one lives. At six it is a map — the child knows the shapes and starts asking what is in them. At eight the flag cards come out and it becomes a quiz. The magnets are the reason it lasts: pieces stay put when the board is standing, so it lives on a desk rather than going back in the box.
