Eight wooden leaves and a board that names the tree each one came from. Oak, Poplar, Aspen, Pine, Maple, Walnut, Alder and Ash — each leaf cut in silhouette from plywood and fitting only its own outline, with the name printed beneath. It looks like a nature-table specimen board because that is what it is.

A puzzle that teaches something true

Most puzzles teach the puzzle. This one teaches that a maple leaf has five points and an ash leaf is a row of leaflets, and that those are different trees. Children who have done it a few times start recognising leaves on the pavement, which is the moment it stops being a toy.

Made to be handled
