Inflate the dinosaur, connect the hose, and a 1.2 metre T-Rex starts spraying the lawn. It is the simplest kind of water toy — no pump, no battery — and the one children run at, hide behind and dare each other to touch. It works on grass, at the beach, beside a paddling pool or anywhere a hose reaches.

Why a dinosaur

Because a sprinkler is a sprinkler until it has teeth. The size matters too: at 99 × 76 × 122 cm inflated it is taller than the children using it, which is what turns running through the spray into a game with a story.

Set-up

Inflate (a hand pump or an electric pump makes it a two-minute job), push the hose onto the inlet at the base, turn the tap on and adjust the pressure until the spray from the head is the height you want. Pack it flat afterwards — it folds into a 24 cm box.
